Job Overview

Atlantic Technological University is seeking a dedicated Faculty Safety Technical Officer (Science & Health) to support the implementation and continuous improvement of occupational health and safety practices across the Faculty of Science & Health. This newly created role plays a critical part in safeguarding staff, students, and third parties across multiple ATU campuses.

The successful candidate will join the University Health & Safety team and work closely with academic, technical, and management colleagues to ensure full legislative compliance and the development of robust safe systems of work.

Key Responsibilities

• Support the implementation and ongoing development of the Occupational Health & Safety Management System within the Faculty of Science & Health
• Provide specialist technical advice on health, safety, and welfare legislation
• Assist in the preparation and review of safety policies, procedures, and risk assessments
• Develop and implement safe working practices for laboratories and clinical environments
• Advise on the safe use of biological, chemical, radiological, and clinical materials, equipment, and animals
• Participate in University-wide and Faculty-specific H&S project working groups
• Conduct site visits and inspections across ATU campuses to address safety issues as they arise
• Work collaboratively with Faculty management, technical staff, and the wider H&S team

Required Skills & Qualifications

• Recognised qualification in Occupational Health & Safety or a related discipline
• Strong knowledge of Irish health and safety legislation and regulatory requirements
• Experience advising on laboratory, scientific, or clinical safety environments
• Proven ability to carry out risk assessments and develop safe systems of work
• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
• Full driving licence and willingness to travel regularly between campuses
• Experience in a third-level or research environment is desirable

Salary, Benefits & Working Hours

• Salary: In line with public sector salary scales and ATU grading structure (competitive, dependent on experience)
• Working Hours: Full-time, standard university working hours

Location & Employer Information

This role is based across multiple Atlantic Technological University campuses in Donegal, Sligo, Galway, and Mayo. Regular travel is required to support colleagues and address safety matters across the Faculty of Science & Health.
