Job Overview
The Health Service Executive is seeking an exceptional leader for the role of National Programme Director – National Cancer Control Programme. This is a senior Consultant-level leadership opportunity based in Dublin, responsible for strategic direction, service development and national oversight of cancer services across Ireland.
This high-impact role will shape national cancer policy, service integration and quality standards while working closely with designated cancer centres and key clinical stakeholders. The successful candidate will bring significant clinical credibility, senior leadership experience and a proven track record in cancer-related service delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide national strategic leadership for the National Cancer Control Programme.
- Oversee development, implementation and evaluation of national cancer policies and service frameworks.
- Collaborate with designated cancer centres and relevant stakeholders to ensure high-quality, patient-centred care.
- Drive service improvement, governance and quality assurance initiatives.
- Advise senior HSE leadership on cancer-related clinical and operational matters.
- Lead multidisciplinary engagement across hospital and community cancer services.
- Travel nationally to visit designated cancer centres and related services as required.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Registration on a Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland, or eligibility for such registration.
- Permanent appointment as a Consultant within the Irish Public Health Service.
- Minimum of 10 years post-qualification experience, including at least five years in the relevant specialist area.
- Significant leadership and senior management experience in a cancer-related area.
- Membership or fellowship of a recognised professional college.
- Demonstrated strategic leadership, governance and programme management capability.
- Strong communication, stakeholder engagement and organisational skills.
- Must be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties of the office.
- Must be of good character.
- Applicants who are not classified as new entrants must be under 65 years of age on the first day of the month in which the closing date falls.

- Salary in line with Consultant Unclassified 101T HSE consolidated pay scales (February 2026 revision).

Location & Employer Information

The post is within the Health Service Executive (HSE), Ireland’s publicly funded healthcare provider. The successful candidate will work at national level, influencing policy, governance and the delivery of cancer services across the health system.
