Wexford General Hospital is recruiting a Staff Nurse to join its Intensive Care Unit on a permanent, wholetime basis. This is an opportunity to work at the heart of critical care in a busy acute hospital serving communities across the South East, delivering highly specialised nursing to patients with complex, life-threatening conditions.
Role Overview
The Staff Nurse — Intensive Care Unit will provide safe, evidence-based nursing care to critically ill patients within the ICU at Wexford General Hospital. Working within a multidisciplinary critical care team, the successful candidate will be responsible for the holistic assessment, planning, delivery, and evaluation of patient care in line with An Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann (NMBI) standards and HSE clinical governance requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide direct nursing care to critically ill patients in the Intensive Care Unit, adhering to NMBI professional standards and best practice guidelines.
- Continuously assess, monitor, and respond to changes in patient condition, escalating to the multidisciplinary team as required.
- Operate and monitor specialist ICU equipment including ventilators, haemodynamic monitoring systems, and infusion devices.
- Administer medications and treatments in accordance with prescriptions, HSE policy, and patient safety protocols.
- Maintain accurate, contemporaneous nursing records and care plans in line with professional and organisational requirements.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, and the wider clinical team, providing compassionate support in highly sensitive situations.
- Contribute to the ongoing development of critical care nursing practice, quality improvement initiatives, and clinical audit within the unit.
- Participate in the orientation and support of student nurses and less experienced colleagues.
- Adhere to all HSE infection prevention and control, health and safety, and patient dignity policies.
Requirements
Candidates must be registered in the General division of the Register of Nurses and Midwives maintained by NMBI (or be entitled to be so registered). Post-registration experience in critical care or intensive care nursing is highly desirable. Salary
€38,166 – €56,592 per annum (HSE Staff Nurse scale, Grade 2135, 13-point scale, plus long-service increments). Salary is based on the HSE Consolidated Pay Scales effective 1 June 2026.

Wexford General Hospital, Wexford town. Wexford General is the primary acute hospital for County Wexford and serves a wide catchment area across the HSE Dublin and South East region, providing the full range of acute medical, surgical, and critical care services.
