University Hospital Kerry is recruiting a Clinical Nurse Manager 2 (CNM2) to provide clinical leadership across its Emergency Department and Acute Floor. This permanent, whole-time position offers an experienced nursing professional the opportunity to shape patient care delivery and lead a multidisciplinary team at one of the South West’s principal acute hospitals.
About the Role
The CNM2 will hold day-to-day operational and clinical responsibility for the Emergency Department and Acute Floor at University Hospital Kerry. The successful candidate will provide strong nursing leadership, promote a culture of continuous quality improvement, and ensure that patient safety and care standards are maintained to the highest level within a busy, acute environment. This role is central to the effective functioning of emergency and acute services and offers significant scope to influence clinical practice and staff development at ward and department level.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide clinical and managerial leadership to nursing staff in the Emergency Department and Acute Floor, fostering a culture of excellence, accountability, and compassionate care.
- Manage the day-to-day operation of the department, including staffing, rostering, and resource allocation, to ensure safe and effective service delivery.
- Monitor and maintain nursing standards, implementing evidence-based practice and clinical guidelines in line with HSE and national policy.
- Lead on patient flow and capacity management, collaborating with the multidisciplinary team to facilitate timely, high-quality patient outcomes.
- Undertake clinical audit, risk management, and incident review processes, contributing to quality and patient safety initiatives at department level.
- Support, supervise, and develop nursing staff, including involvement in performance management, education, and professional development activity.
- Liaise with the Assistant Director of Nursing and wider hospital management on service planning, policy development, and strategic improvement.
- Maintain accurate clinical records and ensure compliance with documentation standards, data protection requirements, and HSE governance frameworks.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of departmental policies, procedures, and protocols in line with current legislation and best practice.
Requirements
Candidates must meet the eligibility criteria set out in the Job Specification, available to download from the Rezoomo advertisement. The following are typical requirements for this grade:
- Be registered in the General Division of the Register of Nurses and Midwives maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI), or be entitled to be so registered.
- Have a minimum of five years post-registration nursing experience, of which a minimum of two years must be in the specialty or a related area (emergency / acute care).
- Have the clinical, managerial, and administrative capacity to plan, organise, and manage nursing services at departmental level.
- Demonstrate evidence of continuous professional development and a commitment to maintaining competence in clinical practice and leadership.
- Candidates must have satisfactory experience in a supervisory or management capacity, or have relevant post-registration qualifications acceptable to the HSE.

Salary
This post is remunerated at the HSE Clinical Nurse Manager 2 (General) scale, effective 1 June 2026: €62,699 – €74,123 per annum (11-point scale), with long-service increments (LSIs) of €76,921 and €79,227 payable subject to eligibility. Salary is based on the HSE Consolidated Pay Scales per Department of Health Circular 2/2026.

University Hospital Kerry (UHK) is the principal acute hospital serving County Kerry and surrounding areas, operating under HSE South West (Kerry and Cork). The hospital provides a broad range of emergency, medical, surgical, and specialist services and is a key site within the regional acute hospital network. This CNM2 post is based in the Emergency Department and Acute Floor, which form a central part of UHK’s unscheduled care pathway.
