Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe is seeking a Consultant Anaesthesiologist with a special interest in Intensive Care Medicine for a permanent whole-time appointment. This senior consultant role offers the opportunity to deliver high-impact critical care and anaesthetic services across two key acute hospital sites in the West of Ireland.

The post provides a balanced clinical commitment between Portiuncula Hospital and Roscommon University Hospital, supporting high-quality patient outcomes within a multidisciplinary consultant-led service.
Key Responsibilities
• Provide consultant-level anaesthetic services across elective and emergency care
• Deliver specialist Intensive Care Medicine services within the ICU
• Participate in the consultant on-call rota as required
• Lead and support multidisciplinary critical care teams
• Contribute to clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement initiatives
• Support education, supervision, and training of NCHDs and clinical staff
• Engage in service development aligned with national clinical programmes
Required Skills & Qualifications
• Registration on the Specialist Division of the Medical Council of Ireland in Anaesthesiology
• Demonstrable experience in Intensive Care Medicine
• Eligibility for appointment as Consultant Anaesthetist under HSE criteria
• Proven ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary consultant team
• Excellent clinical decision-making and leadership skills
• Commitment to patient safety, quality, and continuous improvement
Salary, Benefits & Working Hours
• Salary in line with HSE Consultant Anaesthetist (Grade 1015) consolidated pay scales (August 2025)
• Permanent whole-time contract
• Weekly commitment:
• Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe – 32 hours
• Roscommon University Hospital – 5 hours
