University Hospital Galway is seeking a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon to join its senior medical team on a permanent, whole-time basis. This is a high-impact consultant role offering clinical leadership, advanced ophthalmic practice, and involvement in teaching and service development within one of Ireland’s leading acute hospitals.

The post is open to both HSE and non-HSE applicants and offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to regional and national ophthalmology services.


Key Responsibilities

• Provide consultant-level ophthalmic surgical and clinical care
• Lead and develop ophthalmology services within University Hospital Galway
• Participate in elective and emergency ophthalmic care delivery
• Supervise and train NCHDs, registrars, and medical students
• Contribute to clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement
• Engage in research, innovation, and service planning
• Participate in on-call and rota commitments as required


Required Skills & Qualifications

• Registration as a Specialist in Ophthalmology on the Irish Medical Council Specialist Register
• Eligibility to work as a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon in Ireland
• Demonstrated experience in ophthalmic surgery and subspecialty practice
• Strong leadership, communication, and multidisciplinary team skills
• Commitment to continuous professional development, audit, and teaching


Salary, Benefits & Working Hours

• Salary: As per HSE Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon (1147) salary scale, in line with Department of Health approved consolidated pay scales
• Contract: Permanent Wholetime
• Working Hours: 37 hours per week
