University Hospital Kerry (UHK), part of the Health Service Executive (HSE) South West region, is recruiting a Chief Medical Scientist (Microbiology). This permanent wholetime role offers senior leadership responsibility within the hospital’s diagnostic microbiology service. The position is open to both HSE and non-HSE applicants.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead, manage and coordinate the Microbiology Laboratory service at UHK.
• Ensure high-quality, safe and efficient service delivery in line with HSE policies.
• Provide advanced scientific leadership across microbiological testing and surveillance.
• Oversee staff supervision, performance management and workforce planning.
• Maintain accreditation and quality management systems within the laboratory.
• Collaborate with clinical teams on infection prevention and control.
• Support research, training and continuous professional development within the department.
• Manage laboratory resources, procurement and service development initiatives.
Required Skills & Qualifications
• Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree in Biomedical Science or equivalent recognised qualification.
• Fellowship of the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine (FACSLM) or eligible equivalent.
• Significant post-qualification experience in Microbiology at Senior grade or higher.
• Strong leadership, staff management and service-development experience.
• Demonstrated expertise in quality systems, accreditation and clinical governance.
• Excellent communication, analytical and organisational skills.
