Job Overview
The Clinical Specialist Speech and Language Therapist Louth role offers an exciting opportunity to lead and deliver highly specialised speech and language therapy services within the ICU at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital. This permanent wholetime position focuses on providing advanced assessment and intervention for patients with complex communication and swallowing disorders.
Working as part of the Critical Care multidisciplinary team, the successful candidate will shape and develop the Critical Care SLT service in line with best practice, emerging evidence, and national legislation.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver highly specialised speech and language therapy assessment and intervention to ICU inpatients with complex communication and dysphagia needs.
- Manage patients with tracheostomies, ventilator dependency, and highly complex clinical presentations.
- Provide transitional care planning for patients with ongoing complex needs following ICU admission.
- Act as a senior decision-maker regarding dysphagia management and communication interventions within scope of practice.
- Work collaboratively with the Critical Care multidisciplinary team to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
- Lead and contribute to the development of the Critical Care SLT service in line with best available evidence.
- Analyse service demand and implement quality improvement initiatives focused on patient-centred care.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, caregivers, and healthcare professionals.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Recognised qualification in Speech and Language Therapy.
- Registration with CORU or eligibility for registration.
- Significant post-qualification experience, including experience in acute and/or critical care settings.
- Demonstrated expertise in dysphagia management and complex communication disorders.
- Experience managing patients with tracheostomies and ventilator dependency is highly desirable.
- Strong leadership, clinical decision-making, and service development skills.
- Excellent interpersonal, organisational, and communication skills.

This position is based at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, Co. Louth, within HSE Dublin and North East (North Dublin, Meath, Louth, Cavan and Monaghan). The hospital provides a comprehensive range of acute services and plays a key role in critical care delivery across the region.
