The Health Service Executive (HSE) is Ireland’s national healthcare provider, delivering comprehensive medical services across the country. We are seeking a dedicated Consultant Gastroenterologist and General Physician to join our team at Wexford General Hospital, providing specialized care in our Gastroenterology Department while contributing to general medical services across our 37-hour per week permanent position.
About the Role
This is a permanent wholetime consultant position combining gastroenterology specialization with general physician duties at Wexford General Hospital. You will lead clinical care in gastroenterology while contributing to general medical services, working within a multidisciplinary team to deliver excellent patient outcomes in County Wexford’s primary acute care facility.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive gastroenterology consultation and treatment services for complex digestive system disorders
- Deliver general physician care across medical wards and emergency department settings
- Lead endoscopic procedures including colonoscopy, gastroscopy, and specialized diagnostic interventions
- Collaborate with surgical teams, oncology, and other specialties for integrated patient care pathways
- Supervise and train NCHDs, medical students, and healthcare professionals in gastroenterology and general medicine
- Participate in on-call rotas and emergency medical services coverage
- Contribute to service development, clinical governance, and quality improvement initiatives
Required Qualifications
Essential Requirements
- Full registration with the Medical Council of Ireland
- Specialist registration in Gastroenterology or dual training in Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine
- Minimum 6 years post-graduate experience with specialized gastroenterology training
- Competency in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy procedures
- Experience in acute general medicine and emergency medical care
Preferred Qualifications
- Higher specialist training in inflammatory bowel disease, hepatology, or advanced endoscopy
- Research experience and publications in gastroenterology or internal medicine
- Leadership and teaching experience in hospital settings
- Additional subspecialty interests in areas such as nutrition or motility disorders
