Job Overview

The Deputy Director of Nursing Waterford opportunity at University Hospital Waterford offers an exciting leadership role within a dynamic acute hospital setting. This specified purpose wholetime position plays a key role in supporting nursing governance, service integration, and high standards of patient care across the hospital.

Reporting to senior nursing leadership, the successful candidate will help drive quality improvement, workforce development, and operational excellence in line with national HSE standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the Director of Nursing in strategic planning and operational management
  • Lead and oversee clinical governance and quality assurance initiatives
  • Promote best practice in patient safety and person-centred care
  • Manage workforce planning, staffing allocation, and performance management
  • Drive service improvement and integration across departments
  • Ensure compliance with HSE policies, procedures, and regulatory standards
  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and professional development for nursing staff

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Registered General Nurse with active registration on the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI)
  • Significant senior nursing management experience in an acute hospital setting
  • Demonstrated leadership and team management capability
  • Strong understanding of clinical governance and healthcare legislation
  • Excellent communication, organisational, and decision-making skills
  • Relevant postgraduate qualification in healthcare management or related field (desirable)

Salary, Benefits & Working Hours

This role is aligned to the Director of Nursing 1 – Assistant (Grade 2910) salary scale.

Salary Scale: €72,122 – €89,004 per annum (incremental scale)

Specified Purpose – Wholetime contract in accordance with HSE terms and conditions, including public sector pension scheme, annual leave entitlements, and ongoing professional development opportunities.

This role is based at University Hospital Waterford, County Waterford, within HSE Dublin and South East. The hospital provides a wide range of acute medical and surgical services and is a key regional centre for specialist care.
