Job Overview

The Director of Midwifery 1 HSE West & North West is a senior leadership opportunity within the Women’s and Childrens Network of Care (NoC). This pivotal role provides strategic and operational leadership across maternity services within the HSE West & North West RHA, ensuring the highest standards of clinical governance, patient safety, and service development.

The successful candidate will play a central role in shaping regional midwifery services, supporting multidisciplinary collaboration, and driving continuous improvement in line with national maternity strategies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership and professional direction for midwifery services across the region.
  • Ensure safe, high-quality, woman-centred care aligned with national policies and clinical standards.
  • Lead service planning, workforce development, and governance frameworks.
  • Collaborate with senior management, clinical teams, and regional directors to enhance service integration.
  • Drive quality improvement initiatives and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Support education, research, and evidence-based practice within maternity services.
  • Manage resources effectively to ensure optimal service delivery across multiple sites.
  • Contribute to regional and national maternity service developments.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Registered Midwife with active registration on the Midwives Division of the NMBI register.
  • Significant senior management experience within maternity or acute healthcare services.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in large, complex healthcare environments.
  • Strong knowledge of clinical governance, risk management, and quality assurance.
  • Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and drive organisational change.
  • Excellent communication, strategic planning, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Eligibility to work in Ireland.

Salary, Benefits & Working Hours

  • Salary Scale (Director of Midwifery Band 1 – effective 1 February 2026): €95,664 – €111,623 per annum (7-point scale, plus applicable Long Service Increments).

Location & Employer Information

This role is based within the HSE West & North West Regional Health Area, covering counties Sligo, Roscommon, Mayo, Leitrim, Galway, Donegal, and Cavan. The post holder will be required to attend Galway University Hospital 2–3 days per week and travel frequently between sites; therefore, access to transport is essential.

A panel may be formed from this campaign to fill permanent and specified purpose vacancies (full-time or part-time) within the region.
