Job Overview
Galway University Hospitals are seeking an experienced Senior Medical Scientist (Virology) to join the Virology Department, including participation in the National Public Testing (NPT) programme. This is a permanent, whole-time role offering the opportunity to work within an ISO 15189 accredited laboratory supporting critical diagnostic virology services across the region.
This role is open to both HSE and non-HSE applicants and offers long-term career stability within Ireland’s public health system.
Key Responsibilities
• Provide senior-level clinical diagnostic virology services
• Contribute to National Public Testing (NPT) in Virology
• Support and maintain ISO 15189 accreditation standards
• Participate as a senior team member in quality management systems
• Ensure compliance with HSE laboratory governance and safety standards
• Assist in training, supervision, and mentoring of laboratory staff
• Participate in service development and continuous quality improvement
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary clinical and laboratory teams
Required Skills & Qualifications
• CORU registration as a Medical Scientist (or eligibility to register)
• Demonstrable depth and breadth of Clinical Diagnostic Virology experience
• Proven experience working in an ISO 15189 accredited Virology or Microbiology laboratory
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience of NPT in Virology
• Experience contributing to ISO 15189 accreditation processes
• Strong analytical, organisational, and teamwork skills
