Medical Scientist – Microbiology – Mayo | Mayo University Hospital

Mayo University Hospital, part of the HSE West and North West region, is seeking a Staff Grade Medical Scientist (Microbiology) to join its laboratory team. This permanent, whole-time position offers an opportunity to contribute to high-quality diagnostic services in a busy regional hospital setting.

About the Role

As a Medical Scientist (Microbiology), you will play a vital role in the delivery of laboratory diagnostics that support infection prevention and patient management. The role involves performing analytical testing, ensuring quality control, and collaborating closely with clinical and scientific staff within the Microbiology Department.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform microbiological tests, including culture, identification, and sensitivity analysis.
  • Maintain and calibrate laboratory instruments to ISO15189 standards.
  • Ensure accuracy and timeliness in reporting test results.
  • Support infection control initiatives through data analysis and reporting.
  • Participate in laboratory quality assurance and audit programmes.
  • Contribute to training and mentoring of junior staff and students.
  • Adhere to all HSE health, safety, and ethical guidelines.

Required Qualifications

Essential

  • Hold an approved degree in Biomedical Science (or equivalent qualification) as validated by the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine (ACSLM).
  • Eligible for or hold membership with the ACSLM.
  • Demonstrate depth and breadth of experience in clinical microbiology relevant to the role.

Preferred

  • Experience with molecular diagnostic techniques (e.g. PCR, NAAT).
  • Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
  • Evidence of continuous professional development in microbiology.

What We Offer

  • Salary: As per HSE Consolidated Salary Scales (effective 1 August 2025):
    €41,988 – €68,638 per annum (Medical Scientist, Staff Grade – Code 3875, inclusive of 1% PSA 2024–2026 increase).
