Medical Scientist, Senior (Blood & Tissue Establishment) – Galway University Hospitals

Galway University Hospitals is seeking an experienced Senior Medical Scientist to join its Blood and Tissue Establishment. This is a permanent, whole-time post offering the opportunity to work at senior level within an ISO 15189 accredited Blood Transfusion laboratory and GMP-compliant tissue environment, supporting critical patient services across the region.

This role is open to both HSE and non-HSE applicants and is suited to professionals with demonstrable expertise in blood, tissue, GMP, and quality management systems.


Key Responsibilities

• Provide senior scientific support within the Blood, Tissue and GMP Establishment
• Demonstrate leadership in quality management systems and regulatory compliance
• Work in accordance with ISO 15189 and relevant EU and national legislation
• Participate in laboratory out-of-hours cover and on-call rotas
• Support validation, audit preparation, and continuous quality improvement
• Contribute to staff training, supervision, and competency assessment
• Ensure safe, accurate, and timely laboratory services for patients


Required Skills & Qualifications

• Eligibility for Senior Medical Scientist grade within the Irish health service
• Demonstrated depth and breadth of experience in Blood, Tissue and GMP Establishment work
• Proven experience with Quality Management Systems relevant to laboratory services
• Experience (including student placement) in an ISO 15189 accredited Blood Transfusion laboratory
• Ability to clearly detail the accredited laboratory experience in the application
• Willingness to participate in out-of-hours laboratory cover and rotas
• Strong analytical, organisational, and communication skills

• Salary in line with HSE Senior Medical Scientist (Grade 3877) consolidated pay scales, effective from 1 August 2025
