Galway University Hospitals is recruiting a Pharmacist Advanced Specialist in Infectious Disease / HIV (Ard Cógaiseoir Shaineolaíoch, Galair Thógálacha HIV) to deliver expert clinical pharmacy services within a multidisciplinary infectious disease and HIV team. This is a permanent, wholetime post offering a senior specialist-level career opportunity in one of Ireland’s leading acute hospital groups.
Role Overview
The Pharmacist Advanced Specialist (Grade 3250) will provide a high-quality, patient-centred clinical pharmacy service within the Infectious Disease and HIV speciality at Galway University Hospitals. The post-holder will operate as an expert practitioner and clinical resource across multidisciplinary teams, contributing to service development, medicine optimisation, and the advancement of infection prevention and antimicrobial stewardship practice.
Key Responsibilities
The following responsibilities are representative of this grade and speciality, and will be confirmed against the official job specification on application:
- Deliver advanced clinical pharmacy services within the Infectious Disease / HIV service, including medication review, therapeutic decision-making, and patient counselling.
- Apply in-depth knowledge of infection prevention and control principles, particularly in the care of immunocompromised and vulnerable patient groups.
- Lead and contribute to medicine-related improvement projects that enhance service delivery within the speciality.
- Critically appraise clinical and commercial literature on medicines to inform evidence-based prescribing and pharmacy practice.
- Utilise electronic patient information and prescribing systems to support safe and effective medication management.
- Provide clinical leadership within the pharmacy team and contribute to the development of the broader multidisciplinary team.
- Develop and implement protocols, guidelines, and policies relating to drug use, storage, safe handling, and relevant health and safety legislation.
- Contribute to the training and professional development of pharmacy staff and other healthcare disciplines.
- Drive research, audit, and quality improvement initiatives in line with best practice and organisational priorities.
- Manage caseloads effectively, prioritising according to clinical need and resource availability.
Requirements
Candidates must demonstrate depth and breadth of post-qualification experience within Infectious Disease / HIV pharmacy practice. The full eligibility criteria will be outlined in the campaign documentation available via Rezoomo.
- Demonstrated clinical and professional expertise in Clinical Pharmacy Service provision.
- Knowledge of infection prevention and control principles in vulnerable patient populations.
- Evidence of effective organisation, management, and leadership skills, including resource management awareness.
- Experience managing medicine-related improvement projects and utilising electronic prescribing systems.
- Ability to critically evaluate clinical literature and apply findings to practice.

Salary
€83,584 – €98,983 per annum (HSE Pharmacist Advanced Specialist scale, Grade 3250, 8-point scale), based on the HSE Consolidated Salary Scales effective 1 June 2026. Long Service Increments (LSIs) apply beyond the standard scale maximum.

Galway University Hospitals (GUH) is a major acute teaching hospital group in the HSE West and North West region, serving a large catchment area across the west of Ireland. GUH provides a comprehensive range of acute, elective, and specialist services and is a key centre for infectious disease and HIV care in the region. The post is based on-site at GUH, Galway.
