About the Role

As a Staff Nurse in Mental Health with HSE West and North West, you will provide skilled, evidence-based nursing care to service users experiencing a range of mental health needs. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will play a key role in assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of individualised care, while championing recovery-focused practice and the dignity of every person in your care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality, person-centred psychiatric nursing care in line with NMBI standards and HSE policy.
  • Assess service users’ mental health needs and contribute to the development, implementation and review of individualised care plans.
  • Administer medications safely and monitor therapeutic response, side effects and overall wellbeing.
  • Work collaboratively with consultants, allied health professionals, families and community partners to support recovery.
  • Maintain accurate, contemporaneous clinical records in line with professional and legal requirements.
  • Promote a safe, respectful and therapeutic environment, with strong attention to risk assessment and safeguarding.
  • Participate in clinical audit, quality improvement and ongoing continuing professional development.

Requirements

  • Be registered, or eligible for registration, in the Psychiatric Division of the Register of Nurses maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).
  • Maintain active annual registration with NMBI on appointment.
  • Demonstrate the clinical, communication and interpersonal skills required to deliver safe, effective mental health nursing.
  • Show a clear understanding of recovery-focused, trauma-informed and person-centred care.
  • Possess the requisite knowledge and ability, including a high standard of suitability, for the proper discharge of the role.

Salary

€38,523 – €56,384 per annum (HSE Mental Health Staff Nurse scale, 13-point scale, plus LSIs where applicable), based on the HSE Consolidated Salary Scales effective 1 February 2026. Relevant qualification and location allowances may apply in line with HSE circulars.

Location

This post is based in County Donegal within HSE West and North West, the region covering Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon, Mayo and Galway. Donegal mental health services support a largely rural population across a geographically diverse county, from Letterkenny and the Inishowen peninsula to the south Donegal coast. Successful candidates will work within established acute, community and continuing-care mental health teams, contributing directly to service delivery and population health outcomes in the North West.
