The HSE is seeking an experienced Medical Scientist, Specialist – Specimen Reception to join the Pathology Department at Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise. This permanent, whole-time role plays a critical part in ensuring the safe, accurate, and timely receipt and processing of laboratory specimens, with a strong emphasis on laboratory information systems and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities
• Oversee and coordinate specialist specimen reception services within the laboratory
• Ensure accurate specimen identification, registration, and tracking using laboratory information systems
• Apply specialist knowledge of laboratory workflows, IT systems, and quality procedures
• Maintain compliance with accreditation, health & safety, and data protection standards
• Troubleshoot complex specimen and system-related issues
• Support training and guidance of scientific and support staff
• Contribute to service improvement initiatives and audit processes
Required Skills & Qualifications
• Eligibility for registration with the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine (ACSLM)
• Recognised qualification as a Medical Scientist
• Demonstrable depth and breadth of experience in laboratory testing and/or laboratory IT systems
• Proven specialist knowledge relevant to specimen reception services
• Strong organisational, analytical, and communication skills
• Ability to work effectively in a busy acute hospital laboratory environment
Salary, Benefits & Working Hours
• Salary: In line with HSE Medical Scientist – Specialist consolidated salary scales (Grade 3878)
• Contract: Permanent, Whole-time
