Job Overview
This Clinical Nurse Specialist, Paediatric Diabetes position is open to both HSE and non-HSE applicants and is available on both a Permanent Wholetime and Specified Purpose Wholetime basis. The role is based at Portiuncula University Hospital Galway in Ballinasloe and forms part of HSE West and North West services.
The successful candidate will provide specialist paediatric diabetes nursing expertise while supporting patients, families, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams in delivering safe, evidence-based, and compassionate care.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver specialist nursing care to paediatric diabetes patients in accordance with HSE clinical standards.
- Conduct comprehensive bio-psychosocial assessments relating to patient care needs.
- Develop and implement individualised care plans for children and young people with diabetes.
- Provide clinical leadership and support to nursing and multidisciplinary colleagues.
- Support patient and family education regarding diabetes management and treatment plans.
- Participate in service development initiatives within paediatric diabetes care.
- Maintain accurate clinical documentation and ensure compliance with healthcare governance standards.
- Contribute to quality improvement and evidence-based practice initiatives within the hospital.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Registered Nurse qualification with relevant Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) registration.
- Relevant experience in paediatric nursing and diabetes care.
- Demonstrated ability to complete in-depth bio-psychosocial assessments.
- Strong communication, organisational, and multidisciplinary teamwork skills.
- Experience supporting specialist clinical nursing services is desirable.
- A recognised qualification in Counselling from a reputable educational institution is preferable.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a specialist healthcare team.

Salary for this Clinical Nurse Specialist, Paediatric Diabetes role will be aligned with HSE salary scales for Clinical Nurse Specialist (Children’s) Grade 2626 positions.
