A permanent, whole-time Plumber position is available at Portiuncula University Hospital, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway. This is an excellent opportunity for a qualified, experienced trades professional to join the Maintenance Department of one of the HSE West and North West region’s principal acute hospitals and play a direct role in maintaining safe, compliant healthcare infrastructure.
Role Overview
Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing and mechanical systems throughout a busy acute hospital campus. This role demands a strong background in healthcare or similarly controlled environments and a practical, safety-first approach to all works.
Key Responsibilities
- Installation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing systems across the hospital estate.
- Mechanical maintenance activities in an industrial/healthcare setting.
- Operation and maintenance of plant and equipment in compliance with health and safety regulations.
- Driving HSE-owned vehicles as required across the hospital campus or between sites.
- Compliance with all relevant healthcare facility standards, infection control requirements, and HSE policies.
- Participation in planned preventative maintenance programmes.
Requirements
- Minimum of 5 years’ satisfactory post-qualification experience in fitting plumbing, relevant to the role.
- Demonstrated depth and breadth of experience working in healthcare facilities or similar controlled environments.
- Demonstrated depth and breadth of experience in mechanical maintenance in an industrial setting.
- Valid Safe Pass certification (or equivalent approved qualification).
- Full, clean Driver’s Licence — Category B (required, as the post involves driving HSE-owned vehicles).
Salary
€42,486 – €48,534 per annum (HSE Plumber scale, 10-point scale effective 1 June 2026, plus Long Service Increment where applicable). Salary is based on the HSE Consolidated Salary Scales, Grade 5134.
Location
Portiuncula University Hospital is a 300-bed acute general hospital located in Ballinasloe, Co. Galway, serving a large catchment area across east Galway and south Roscommon. The Maintenance Department provides essential technical support across all hospital services. The post is based on-site at Portiuncula University Hospital, Ballinasloe Maintenance Department.
