Job Overview
University Hospital Waterford is seeking an experienced and motivated Assistant Director of Nursing – Patient Flow to play a key leadership role in optimising patient movement across the hospital. This senior nursing position is central to improving patient experience, reducing delays, and supporting safe, effective care delivery across acute services.
This is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious nursing leader to contribute at strategic and operational level within a major HSE acute hospital.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead and coordinate patient flow processes across inpatient, emergency, and discharge pathways
• Work closely with multidisciplinary teams to reduce overcrowding and improve bed utilisation
• Support the Director of Nursing team in operational and strategic service delivery
• Monitor patient flow performance indicators and implement improvement initiatives
• Contribute to escalation planning and hospital capacity management
• Promote best practice in clinical governance, quality, and patient safety
• Support and mentor nursing staff and ward management teams
• Participate in service planning, audits, and policy implementation
Required Skills & Qualifications
• Registration as a Nurse on the Register of Nurses and Midwives maintained by NMBI
• Significant post-registration nursing experience in an acute hospital setting
• Proven leadership and management experience at senior nursing level
• Demonstrated experience in patient flow, bed management, or operational hospital management
• Strong communication, decision-making, and problem-solving skills
• Relevant postgraduate qualification in management or leadership (desirable)
Salary, Benefits & Working Hours
• Grade: Director of Nursing 1 – Assistant (Grade Code 2910)
• Salary Scale: €71,408 – €88,123 per annum (HSE Consolidated Salary Scales, effective 1 August 2025)
• Permanent, pensionable public service role
