The Health Service Executive (HSE) is recruiting a Clinical Midwife Manager 2 (CMM2), Specified Purpose Wholetime, for Sligo University Hospital. This is a key midwifery leadership role within the maternity service, offering a full-time temporary contract on the national HSE salary scale. Based in Sligo, this post will support safe, high-quality, woman-centred care across antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal services.

Key Responsibilities
• Provide visible clinical leadership and management to midwifery and nursing staff within the assigned maternity area (e.g. labour ward, antenatal or postnatal ward).
• Ensure the delivery of safe, evidence-based, woman- and family-centred care in line with HSE and hospital policies, guidelines and national standards.
• Coordinate day-to-day operations on the ward or unit, including delegation, supervision and support of midwifery, nursing and healthcare staff.
• Lead and participate in clinical governance, quality improvement and patient safety initiatives, including audit, incident review and implementation of action plans.
• Support effective admission, discharge and transfer planning to optimise patient flow and bed management within the maternity service.
• Contribute to staff rostering and workforce planning to ensure safe staffing levels, skill mix and appropriate use of resources.
• Promote a culture of continuous learning, supporting pre- and post-registration students, new staff and colleagues through teaching, coaching and mentorship.
• Foster effective multidisciplinary teamwork with obstetric, neonatal, anaesthetic, allied health and administrative colleagues to ensure integrated care.
• Engage in service development, change management and implementation of national maternity and midwifery strategies at local level.
• Ensure accurate, timely and comprehensive documentation and clinical records in line with legal, professional and organisational requirements.
• Uphold the values of the HSE and Sligo University Hospital, promoting dignity, respect, compassion and advocacy for women, babies and families.
Required Skills & Qualifications
• Current live registration in the Midwives Division of the NMBI register (or eligibility for same).
• Significant post-registration midwifery experience, including recent experience in acute hospital maternity services.
• Demonstrated leadership experience at Senior Staff Midwife / Clinical Midwife Manager 1 (or equivalent) level, ideally in a busy acute maternity setting.
• Proven ability to manage a ward or clinical area, including delegation, supervision and performance support for staff.
• Strong clinical skills in antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal midwifery, with up-to-date knowledge of national maternity and midwifery guidelines.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with women, families, colleagues and the wider multidisciplinary team.
• Evidence of ongoing continuing professional development; relevant postgraduate qualification in midwifery, women’s health, leadership, management or education is an advantage.
• Strong organisational, time-management and decision-making skills, with the ability to prioritise and respond effectively in a fast-paced environment.
• Commitment to quality improvement, patient safety, clinical governance and audit.
• Good IT literacy and ability to use hospital systems and electronic records in line with data protection requirements.
Salary, Benefits & Working Hours
• Grade: Clinical Midwife Manager 2 (Grade code 2132).
• Salary: €61,463–€77,666 per annum (including Long Service Increment), based on the HSE Consolidated Salary Scales effective from 1 August 2025. Actual starting point will be in line with HSE pay policy and candidate experience.
• Contract type: Specified Purpose Wholetime.
• Employment type: Full-time, temporary (wholetime, typically 39 hours per week).
• Working pattern: Rostered hours over days, nights, weekends and public holidays as required by the maternity service.
