The Health Service Executive (HSE) is seeking applications for the post of Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist (s.i. Psychiatry of Learning Disability), Reference: CDFPLD09. This permanent whole-time position combines 29 hours per week at the Central Mental Hospital, Portrane, and 8 hours per week with the Irish Prison Service. The role is open to both HSE and non-HSE applicants.
Key Responsibilities
• Provide specialist forensic psychiatric care, focusing on individuals with learning disabilities.
• Lead multidisciplinary teams in both secure hospital and prison settings.
• Develop, implement, and evaluate treatment plans for patients requiring forensic psychiatric assessment.
• Contribute to the training and supervision of medical and clinical staff.
• Engage in clinical governance, audit, and service development activities within the Forensic Psychiatry service.
• Collaborate with community and national mental health services to support continuity of care.
Required Skills & Qualifications
• Registration on the Specialist Division of the Irish Medical Council in Psychiatry.
• Significant experience in Forensic Psychiatry, ideally including work with individuals with intellectual disabilities.
• Strong leadership, communication, and team management skills.
• Commitment to continuous professional development and high clinical standards.
• Eligibility for appointment as a Consultant under current HSE standards.
Salary, Benefits & Working Hours
• Salary scale in accordance with Department of Health Consolidated Consultant Salary Scales (effective 1 August 2025): approximately €243,000–€280,000 per annum depending on service and experience (Grade 1826 – Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist).
• 37 hours per week (29 hours Central Mental Hospital, 8 hours Irish Prison Service).
• Permanent, full-time contract with standard HSE pension, annual leave, and CME entitlements.

This post is based primarily at the Central Mental Hospital, Portrane, Co. Dublin, with additional sessions at the Irish Prison Service.
