Job Overview

As a Senior Medical Scientist, you will be a key member of a multidisciplinary laboratory team, supporting consultants, clinicians, and patients through the delivery of efficient and reliable diagnostic services. The role spans a comprehensive pathology service including Biochemistry, Haematology, Blood Transfusion, Microbiology, and Histology, all within an ISO 15189:2022 accredited environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality laboratory diagnostic services in line with clinical and regulatory standards
  • Participate in surveillance and specialist laboratory activities across multiple disciplines
  • Support and collaborate with consultants, clinicians, and healthcare teams
  • Ensure compliance with ISO 15189:2022 standards and quality management systems
  • Supervise and support junior laboratory staff and contribute to team development
  • Assist in service planning, audit, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records and reporting systems
  • Contribute to the efficient operation of the pathology department across hospital and community services

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Recognised qualification in Medical Science or equivalent
  • Registration with CORU as a Medical Scientist (or eligibility for registration)
  • Significant experience in a clinical laboratory setting
  • Demonstrated expertise across one or more pathology disciplines
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory quality standards and accreditation requirements
  • Excellent analytical, organisational, and communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary healthcare environment
  • Leadership or supervisory experience is desirable

Location & Employer Information

This role is based at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, County Louth, a key acute hospital serving the North East region. The Pathology Department supports a wide network including Louth County Hospital, district hospitals, nursing homes, and general practitioners, making this a dynamic and impactful working environment within the public health system.

The position is part of the HSE Dublin and North East region, covering North Dublin, Meath, Louth, Cavan, and Monaghan, and offers the opportunity to work within a large, integrated healthcare network.
