The Health Service Executive (HSE) is seeking a qualified and motivated Staff Grade Medical Scientist in Microbiology to join the team at Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise. This fixed-term, whole-time role offers the opportunity to work within a leading diagnostic service supporting patient care across the Dublin and Midlands region.
Key Responsibilities
• Perform a range of diagnostic tests and investigations within the Microbiology Department.
• Ensure compliance with ISO 15189 accreditation standards and HSE quality systems.
• Participate in method validation, quality control, and audit processes.
• Contribute to infection prevention and control initiatives across the hospital.
• Maintain accurate records and participate in continuous professional development.
• Support senior scientists and contribute to the training of students or new staff.
Required Skills & Qualifications
• Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Medical Science (Microbiology) or equivalent qualification recognised by CORU.
• CORU registration or eligibility for same at the time of appointment.
• Demonstrated post-qualification experience in a clinical microbiology setting.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent attention to detail and commitment to quality assurance.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Salary, Benefits & Working Hours
The salary scale for Medical Scientist, Staff Grade (Code 3875) effective 1 August 2025 is approximately €39,312 to €65,377 per annum (13 points), as per the Department of Health Consolidated Pay Scales.
• Fixed Term, Wholetime Contract.

• Standard working week: 35 hours.
