The Locum Consultant Histopathologist Galway position offers an exceptional opportunity to join BreastCheck Western Unit and Galway University Hospital. This senior consultant role is central to delivering high-quality histopathology services, with a particular focus on breast pathology, within a leading acute hospital setting.
You will play a critical role in supporting diagnostic excellence, multidisciplinary collaboration, and patient-centred cancer screening services across the Western region.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide consultant-level histopathology services with a focus on breast pathology.
- Report on complex histological and cytological specimens in line with national standards.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings and clinical case discussions.
- Contribute to BreastCheck Western Unit screening and diagnostic services.
- Support clinical governance, quality assurance, and audit processes.
- Provide leadership, supervision, and mentoring to junior medical staff and trainees.
- Engage in service development and continuous improvement initiatives.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Registration as a Specialist in the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council of Ireland in Histopathology.
- Eligibility for appointment as a Medical Consultant under HSE regulations.
- Specialist registration must be secured within 180 calendar days of interview if not already held.
- FRCPath or equivalent specialist qualification (desirable).
- Minimum six years satisfactory postgraduate medical training and experience.
- At least four years’ satisfactory experience in Histopathology and Morbid Anatomy.
- Demonstrated experience in Breast Pathology (desirable).
- Commitment to maintaining annual registration with the Medical Council of Ireland.
