About the Role

Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) is recruiting a Candidate Clinical Nurse Specialist (cCNS) – Paediatric Neurology on a permanent, wholetime basis. This post is advertised by the HSE on behalf of CHI, a publicly funded Section 38 organisation, and is open to both HSE and non-HSE applicants. The successful candidate will undertake a structured pathway towards registration as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Paediatric Neurology.

Role Overview

The Candidate Clinical Nurse Specialist will work within the Paediatric Neurology service at Children’s Health Ireland, developing specialist clinical expertise in the care of children and young people with neurological conditions. During the candidature period, the post holder will complete the academic and clinical requirements necessary to meet the criteria for Clinical Nurse Specialist recognition, supported by the multidisciplinary neurology team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver specialist nursing care to children and young people attending the Paediatric Neurology service, under the core concepts of the CNS role: clinical focus, patient advocacy, education and training, audit and research, and consultancy.
  • Complete the agreed candidature pathway, including the required postgraduate qualification in the specialist area, within the designated timeframe.
  • Support nurse-led clinics, patient and family education, and care coordination across inpatient, outpatient and community interfaces.
  • Participate in audit, service evaluation and quality improvement initiatives within the neurology service.
  • Work collaboratively with consultants, nursing colleagues and health and social care professionals across CHI sites.

Requirements

  • Registered on the Children’s and/or General Division of the Register of Nurses and Midwives maintained by NMBI (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland), or eligible to register.
  • A minimum of one year’s post-registration full-time experience (or equivalent), with relevant experience in paediatric neurology or a related specialist area.
  • Willingness to undertake and complete a recognised postgraduate qualification (minimum Level 8) relevant to the specialist area, if not already held.
  • Demonstrated clinical, professional and leadership capability appropriate to the role.

Salary & Benefits

The salary scale for this post aligns with the HSE Clinical Nurse Manager 1 scale (grade code 2127): €57,780 – €68,046 per annum (8 points, effective 1 June 2026, per the HSE Consolidated Salary Scales, DoH Circular 2/2026). Please note that Children’s Health Ireland is a Section 38 organisation and this post is not with the HSE; terms and conditions may differ.
