Frequently asked questions
- How much annual leave do HSE employees get?
- Between 22 and 32 days per year depending on grade and length of service — 22 days for clerical/admin (Grade I–IV) and healthcare assistants, 24 days for a staff nurse (rising to 26 after 5 years), and 24–27 days for senior and management grades. All grades also get 10 public holidays separately.
- When does the HSE leave year run?
- The HSE annual leave year runs from 1 April to 31 March — not the calendar year. Leave should generally be taken within the leave year it is accrued.
- Do part-time HSE staff get annual leave?
- Yes — part-time annual leave is calculated pro-rata to the hours worked. For example, a Grade III clerical officer working 50% (17.5 hours a week) is entitled to about 11 days.
- Can I carry over unused annual leave?
- A limited amount — typically up to 10 days — can be carried over with manager approval, and must usually be taken by 30 June of the following leave year or it is forfeited.
