About the Role
SODEDE03 Consultant Dermatologist This is an appointment to the HSE West & North West Region on a Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023 by the Health Service Executive. The initial commitment for this post will be to Sligo University Hospital for 37 hours per week. This post may be subject to restructuring in the future to facilitate the reorganisation of acute services in line with new clinical models of acute and community services. It is noted that the post must be congruent with the requirements of, and facilitate implementation of national health policy, the HSE’s National Clinical Programmes including commitment to deliver the relevant performance outcomes.
Main Duties of the Job
The Dermatology Pathways (Pigmented Skin Lesions Pathway, Psoriasis Pathway and Acne Pathway) will implement a hub and spoke model of care to facilitate and support the screening and treatment of skin lesions and skin diseases. The Dermatology Pathways aim to provide greater outreach locally in peripheral hospitals to support a local network of GPs, providing care closer to home for patients, and on site in dermatology clinics. To enable delivery of this service resources will be acute based and will provide greater outreach to the community.

- developing, promoting and supporting all stakeholders in the prevention of skin diseases, especially cancers of the skin
- providing greater outreach locally in peripheral hospitals to support a local network of GPs,
- providing care closer to home for patients, and on site in dermatology clinics
Targets have been established for each pathway and KPIs will be measured, with strong expectation that these targets are achieved.
As one of two Consultant Dermatologists in SUH, the post holder will deliver the full range of clinical care for Dermatology patients for the catchment population of Sligo, Leitrim and South Donegal within a team-based model of care, sharing infrastructures, NCHD and support staff.
Implementation of the National Clinical Programme for Dermatology will be managed by each consultant, supported by a National Modernised Care Pathways Implementation Oversight Group, which includes nominated MCP Implementation Leads and representation from the relevant National Clinical Programme. Similar to the other Consultant Dermatologist, the post holder will have access to OPD sessions, day services for minor surgery, in-patient consultations, and full range of diagnostics, research and education facilities and combined clinics/MDM links with the designated tertiary cancer centre at GUH.

Ward consultations are carried out daily. One day per month may be spent with colleagues in GUH for dermatopathology, combined clinic and CME – this can be virtual of face to face. It would also be expected to include the setting up of a dedicated skin cancer clinic in SUH and the introduction of subspecialist clinics in areas such as paediatric dermatology, eczema, psoriasis and contact dermatitis.
The Post holder will:
- strengthen the Dermatology Services in SUH
- Lead the development of a dedicated skin cancer clinic in SUH.
- Support the introduction of subspecialist clinics including paediatric, psoriasis and contact dermatitis.
Attend multidisciplinary meetings for example Dermatopathology, combined patient consultations and Skin Cancer MDM, thereby strengthening ties with Galway University Hospital.
