About the Role

Consultant General Physician - University Hospital Waterford

This is an appointment to HSE Dublin and South East Region on a Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023 by the Health Service Executive. The initial commitment for this post will be to University Hospital Waterford for 37 hours per week. This post may be subject to restructuring in the future to facilitate the reorganisation of acute services in line with new clinical models of acute and community services. It is noted that the post must be congruent with the requirements of, and facilitate implementation of national health policy, the HSE’s National Clinical Programmes including commitment to deliver the relevant performance outcomes.

Main Duties of the Job

To practice as a Consultant in Genitourinary Medicine/ Infectious Disease & General Medicine under the Health Service Executive Dublin and South East and in particular; Provide an GU/Infectious Diseases +/- General Medical service as required including out-patient and inpatient care, ward rounds, consults etc. To undertake the overall medical supervision of patients under their care. Attend as required at any clinic or hospital maintained by the Health Service Executive Dublin South East Area as required by the UHW CEO and to provide either there at or in the appropriate hospital, a diagnosis, or consultant service as may be appropriate for or in respect of eligible patients.

Details

University Hospital Waterford provides specialised medical, surgical and maternity care to the population living in South East Ireland. It is the designated cancer centre for the area. Referrals are received from Counties Waterford, Wexford, Kilkenny, Tipperary, Carlow and South East Laois. This same population base will be served under the Slaintecare programme. UHW is an academic partner of UCC & RCSI. It is one of the 8 Cancer centres, a regional trauma centre and dedicated teaching hospital for UCC & RCSI students with 535 inpatient bed capacity. It is a regional tertiary referral centre for Nephrology, Neurology, Cardiology, Dermatology, Rheumatology, Respiratory / Lung Cancer, Ophthalmology, ENT, Urology, Vascular Surgery, Oncology / Haematology & Palliative Care. It is also the regional trauma centre for the SE. There are significant infrastructural developments scheduled to occur in UHW over the next 5 years.

Benefits

The appointment is whole-time, permanent and pensionable. The annual salary will be as set out in the Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023. Medical Consultants Salary Scales from 1st June 2026: €238,221 €251,098 €264,691 €271,846 €278,998 €286,151. The standard working week applying to the post is: 37 hours per week. The annual leave associated with the post is: 30 Working Days per annum.
