The HSE Mid West Health Region will manage and deliver all public health and social care services for Limerick, Clare and North Tipperary. The Histology Laboratory provides a quality diagnostic service for HSE Mid West Acute Services and a regional service for all clinicians, including General Practitioners.
The post holder will report to the Chief Medical Scientist. The Specialist Medical Scientist will participate in the implementation and management of an overall Histodissection service within the Histology laboratory. The role involves maintaining awareness of the primacy of the patient, participating in the improvement and development of services, and demonstrating behaviour consistent with the mission and values of the Hospital. The Specialist Medical Scientist will be responsible for the macroscopic examination, description, and dissection of surgical and biopsy tissues, and will participate in the implementation of a ‘quality management’ programme. The role also involves training and leading a team of skilled staff, promoting healthy working relationships, and ensuring the appropriate training and competency of staff within the assigned sections. The Specialist Medical Scientist will also be responsible for the organisation of workload, prioritising tasks to ensure the effective running of the Histology Laboratory, and participating in the change management process. The role also involves identifying areas of applied research that will be beneficial to service user expectations, and ensuring that techniques are appropriate for use and in compliance with ISO15189 standards. The Specialist Medical Scientist will also be responsible for the supervision and delegation of the registration, custody and stock level of the relevant laboratory reagents, consumables and other materials held in the Laboratory, and ensuring that policy relating to the relevant laboratory record keeping is followed. The Specialist Medical Scientist will also participate on Hospital and/or external committees as required.
