About the Role
Saint Joseph’s Shankill is the only care home in Ireland that solely cares for people living with dementia. Located on the outskirts of Shankill village and just off the M50, Saint Joseph’s is part of the local community, integrating into local services and organisations where possible so that the people in our care can still play active roles in their neighbourhood. We are a service of St John of God Hospital. We aspire to demonstrate excellence in how we look after and care for people living with this difficult illness. We pride ourselves in our dementia-specific care, looking after people’s psychological, emotional, and spiritual, needs alongside their physical and medical requirements. We offer residential care for 60 people, respite care and daycare service. We understand that moving into long-term care can be stressful, and we aim to make the transition as smooth as possible. People come to Saint Joseph’s to live the best quality of life their illness can afford. We have transformed from a traditional style, medical-modelled nursing home into six new homes or ‘lodges’ as they are known. Staff do not wear uniforms or name badges and we do not have nurse’s stations or medicine trolleys. The environment and design of each lodge resemble a family home with a particular emphasis on dementia design. To model and maintain this culture we continue to ensure staffs develop their skills in caring for people through ongoing education and audit.
We are an accredited Meaningful Care Matters ‘Butterfly Home’, we are part of the Irish Hospice Foundation and the All Ireland Institute for Hospice and Palliative Care’s Caru Programme focussing on person-centred end-of-life care and have achieved the Investing in Volunteers Award for our inspiring Volunteer Programme.
Saint Joseph's is a teaching residential care home with academic links to University College Dublin (UCD) for student nurse placements and we also accept students for placements from local Education Boards.

Requirements
Current registration on the General / Psychiatric division of the register maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI)
Have three years of experience in a senior nursing role in Irelands Healthcare System
Current experience in the care of the elderly and people living with dementia
Comprehensive understanding of relevant clinical standards
Demonstrate excellent communication (both verbal and written), organisational skills, flexibility and commitment
A post-graduate diploma in gerontology or dementia is desirable.
