About the Role

St Luke’s Radiation Oncology Network (SLRON) is seeking to appoint a Director of Physics / Chief Physicist to provide strategic, professional, scientific, academic and managerial leadership for its Physics Department at a pivotal point in the development of the Network.

This is a significant senior leadership opportunity within a large and technologically advanced radiation oncology service providing a range of external beam treatments (VMAT, SABR, SRS), brachytherapy (HDR, Ocular and Prostate seed) and some unsealed source therapies. The successful candidate will lead a multidisciplinary scientific and technical service of more than 40 staff and will play a central role in an ambitious programme of technology renewal, capital investment, service expansion, clinical innovation and research.

The incoming Director will have the opportunity to shape this transformation and influence the technological, scientific and clinical direction of the Network.

SLRON currently operates 14 clinical linear accelerators, with access to a further research linear accelerator, together with 6 CT scanners and 2 MRI scanners. The Network is now embarking on a comprehensive equipment replacement programme alongside a major expansion of its radiation oncology service at Beaumont, including the addition of three further linear accelerators plus three linac bunkers for future expansion.

The Director of Physics / Chief Physicist will provide strategic, professional, scientific, academic and managerial leadership for the Physics Department across SLRON. The Director will have overall responsibility for the scientific leadership, governance and development of radiotherapy physics and will also provide leadership across nuclear medicine physics and Clinical Engineering.

The postholder will be responsible for ensuring that Physics services remain safe, clinically effective, scientifically excellent, innovative, research-active, resilient and responsive to future clinical needs. As a member of the SLRON Network Executive Management Team (NEMT), the postholder will contribute directly to the operation and strategic development of the wider Network.

A major priority will be providing scientific and strategic leadership for the Network’s programme of capital investment and transformation. The Director will have a key role in equipment replacement and procurement, new builds and infrastructure, the introduction of new technologies and clinical techniques, workforce planning and service development.

The Director will promote consistency of quality, standards and practice across all SLRON sites while fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, scientific integrity, innovation and continuous improvement.

It is anticipated that a Deputy Director of Physics post will be in place, or in the process of being established, to strengthen operational management, service continuity, workforce planning and succession planning. The Director will retain overall accountability for the Department while delegating appropriate operational responsibilities to the Deputy Director and other senior staff.

SLRON is committed to developing a strong clinical-academic environment in which research, education and innovation are closely connected to patient care. The Physics Department contributes to research and education within SLRON and through collaborations with a number of universities. The Department has strong academic links through MSc and PhD programmes at University College Dublin and participates in an all-Ireland CAMPEP-accredited radiotherapy physics residency programme.

The postholder will have the opportunity to further develop this clinical-academic culture: strengthening research programmes and university partnerships, supporting postgraduate physics education and supervision, contributing to the Specialist Registrar Physics education, developing collaborative and externally funded research, and creating opportunities for staff to build their scientific, academic and professional careers.

The Director will also represent SLRON nationally and internationally and will be expected to strengthen relationships with other radiotherapy centres, national programmes, universities, professional and regulatory bodies and relevant international organisations.

This appointment comes at a defining point in the development of the Network and offers the successful candidate the opportunity to:

• Shape a major programme of transformation – provide scientific and strategic leadership for comprehensive equipment renewal, significant capital investment and the expansion of radiation oncology services, including three additional linear accelerators at the SLRON Beaumont Centre.
• Lead at scale – provide professional leadership to one of Ireland’s largest medical physics services, with more than 40 scientific and technical staff and an extensive treatment and imaging infrastructure across three sites.
• Participate at executive level – as a member of the SLRON Network Executive Management Team, contribute directly to the strategic direction of the Network and ensure that science, technology and innovation are integral to its future.
• Advance research, education and innovation – build on established academic partnerships, postgraduate programmes and the all-Ireland CAMPEP-accredited radiotherapy physics residency programme to further develop SLRON’s clinical-academic profile and research capability.
• Develop the next generation of scientific leaders – shape workforce strategy, professional development and succession planning within a highly specialised department, supported by a Deputy Director structure designed to strengthen operational leadership and create capacity for strategic development.
• Build national and international connections – strengthen collaboration with radiotherapy centres, universities, professional organisations and other partners and contribute to the continued advancement of Medical Physics in Ireland and internationally.
