What a Healthcare Assistant does

A Health Care Assistant (HCA) provides frontline care to patients and residents under the direction of nurses — helping with washing, dressing, mobility, meals, and monitoring — across acute hospitals, community services, nursing homes and disability services. It is the HSE's highest-volume care role and a common entry point into a healthcare career.

Qualifications you need

The standard requirement is the QQI Level 5 Certificate in Healthcare Support (the major award), or at minimum the two core modules most employers ask for: Care Skills and Care of the Older Person. Some employers will hire care-experienced applicants and support them to complete the qualification on the job. There is no statutory registration body for HCAs in Ireland at present, so the QQI award is the key credential.

Step by step

  • Complete a QQI Level 5 Healthcare Support programme (available through the ETBs, PLC colleges and many private providers, full- or part-time).
  • Get Garda vetting — required for all care roles.
  • Build experience: work-placement hours are part of most courses, and home-support or nursing-home roles are a good start.
  • Apply for HSE and Section 38/39 HCA campaigns — most recruit to county-level panels.
