Job Overview
The Locum Consultant in Emergency Medicine Mayo role offers an exciting opportunity to join the Emergency Department team at Mayo University Hospital, including the Local Injury Unit in Ballina. This 0.5 WTE fixed-term position provides consultant-level leadership and clinical expertise within a dynamic and patient-focused acute care environment.
The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering high-quality emergency care services while contributing to service development and clinical governance within the hospital.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide consultant-led emergency medical care to patients presenting to the Emergency Department and Local Injury Unit.
- Lead and supervise multidisciplinary teams in the assessment, diagnosis, and management of acute presentations.
- Participate in on-call rotas and consultant cover arrangements as required.
- Contribute to clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Support the training and supervision of NCHDs and other clinical staff.
- Collaborate with hospital management and clinical directorates to enhance service delivery.
- Ensure compliance with HSE policies, clinical standards, and best practice guidelines.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Registration as a specialist in the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland in the specialty of Emergency Medicine.
- Demonstrated experience at consultant level in emergency medicine.
- Strong leadership and decision-making capabilities in high-pressure clinical settings.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to continuous professional development and clinical excellence.
- Eligibility to commence the locum post within two months of interview and continue until the post is filled permanently by the Public Appointments Service.

- Salary aligned with HSE Consultant in Emergency Medicine (Grade 169T) pay scales.
- 0.5 Whole-Time Equivalent (part-time) fixed-term contract.

Location & Employer Information

This is a public health service role within the Health Service Executive.
