HSE Consultant Salary Ireland 2026 — Pay Scales by Contract

Last verified 21 Jul 2026· Published 21 Jul 2026

Hospital consultants are among the highest-paid public servants in Ireland. Under the consolidated HSE pay scales effective 1 June 2026, consultant salaries span roughly €203,000 to €286,151 a year depending on the contract type, specialty group and scale point.

Consultant pay at a glance (June 2026)

  • Overall span: about €203,012 at the lowest starting points to €286,151 at the highest points on current scales.
  • Top of scale: the highest common points sit at €283,318–€286,151.
  • Progression: consultants move up their scale by service, like all HSE grades — but the contract type sets which scale applies.

Why contract type matters

A consultant's salary is set by which contract they hold:

  • Public Only Consultant Contract (POCC 2023): the contract offered to all new consultants since 2023. Full-time public commitment (no private practice in public hospitals) in exchange for the highest salary scale.
  • Legacy 2008 contracts (Types A, B and C): older contracts still held by many serving consultants, with different mixes of public and private practice — and correspondingly different scales. Type A (public-only) pays more than Type B/C variants that permit private practice.

What's on top of basic salary

The scale is the basic salary only. Consultants can also receive on-call and call-out payments, structured overtime where it applies, and clinical director or academic allowances for those roles. Total earnings for consultants with significant on-call commitments can be well above the scale figure.

The route to consultant pay

Consultant posts follow years on lower medical scales — intern, SHO, registrar and specialist registrar — before appointment. Consultant recruitment is advertised through HSE campaigns and consultant and doctor vacancies appear on our live listings as they open.
