Quick answer: Nurses and midwives in Ireland can claim a €733 flat-rate expense every year – worth about €147 a year at the 20% rate (about €293 at 40%) – and you can backdate a claim over the last four years. Add medical expenses, remote-working and other reliefs and it is often several hundred euro back. You claim it yourself, free, through Revenue’s myAccount.

If you work for the HSE, a voluntary hospital or a Section 38/39 agency, there is a good chance you are leaving money with Revenue every year. Most PAYE tax back in Ireland is never claimed simply because people do not know it is there. This guide covers the reliefs most relevant to health-sector staff, what they are worth, and exactly how to claim – including for previous years.

Flat-rate (employment) expenses

Flat-rate expenses are a fixed amount Revenue lets workers in certain jobs deduct each year for the cost of uniforms, equipment and tools – with no receipts required. You just have to be in a qualifying role.

  • Nurses and midwives who supply and launder their own uniforms: €733 per year. That reduces your taxable income, so it is worth roughly €147 a year if you pay tax at 20%, or about €293 at 40%.
  • Lower flat-rate amounts apply where the uniform is supplied and laundered free by the employer.
  • Many other health grades have their own flat-rate amounts – radiographers, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, healthcare assistants, and more. Check the exact figure for your grade on Revenue’s official Flat Rate Expense allowances list.

Because you can backdate four years, a first-time nurse claim can be worth roughly €590–€1,170 depending on your tax rate.

Medical expenses

You can claim 20% back on most unreimbursed medical expenses for you or your family – GP visits, consultants, prescriptions, physiotherapy, and more (nursing-home fees qualify at your higher rate). Keep receipts; you can claim for the last four years. See Revenue’s guide to health expenses.

Working from home

If any of your role is done from home (for example admin, on-call or remote clinics), Remote Working Relief lets you claim 30% of the cost of electricity, heating and broadband for the days you worked from home. Revenue can see some of this from your utility records, but you claim it on your annual return.

Other reliefs worth checking

  • Tuition fees – relief at 20% on qualifying third-level course fees (useful if you are upskilling to a specialist or management qualification).
  • Rent Tax Credit – if you pay rent for your home, a credit is available; check the current amount with Revenue.
  • Pension and AVCs – contributions get relief at your marginal rate. See our AVCs for HSE public servants and HSE pension guides.

How to claim (it is free)

You do not need to pay a company a percentage – you can do the whole thing yourself in Revenue’s myAccount:

  • Sign in to Revenue myAccount.
  • Choose Review your tax for the years you want (you can go back four years – each year is claimed separately).
  • Request a Statement of Liability, then complete the Income Tax Return.
  • Under Tax Credits & Reliefs, add your flat-rate expenses, health expenses and any other reliefs.
  • Submit. Most online refunds are paid within about five working days.

Once you add the nurses’ flat-rate expense, Revenue usually carries it forward automatically each year.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the nurses' flat-rate expense in Ireland?
Nurses and midwives who supply and launder their own uniform can claim a EUR733 flat-rate expense each year. That is worth about EUR147 a year if you pay tax at 20%, or about EUR293 at 40%. A lower amount applies if your employer supplies and launders the uniform.
Can I claim tax back for previous years?
Yes. Under the four-year rule you can claim for the current year and the previous four years. Each year is claimed separately in Revenue's myAccount, so a first-time nurse claim can be worth several hundred euro.
How do I claim tax back as an HSE employee?
Sign in to Revenue myAccount, choose Review your tax for the relevant year, request a Statement of Liability, complete the Income Tax Return, and add your reliefs under Tax Credits and Reliefs. Most online refunds are paid within about five working days.
Do I have to pay a tax-refund company?
No. You can claim everything yourself for free through Revenue myAccount. Tax-refund agencies do the same thing but keep a percentage of your refund.
What medical expenses can I claim?
You can claim 20% back on most unreimbursed medical costs for you and your family, including GP and consultant fees, prescriptions and physiotherapy. Keep your receipts; you can claim for the last four years.
