Retiring from the HSE (HR107a): The Process, Step by Step

Last verified 23 Jul 2026· Published 23 Jul 2026

Retirement from the HSE is a process you start months in advance — pensions take time to set up, and the paperwork matters. Here’s the sequence.

Before anything: know your scheme

Your minimum and normal retirement ages — and how your pension is calculated — depend on when you joined the public service (pre-2004, 2004–2012, or the post-2013 Single Scheme). Our HSE pension guide covers the schemes, the lump sum, and how to boost benefits with AVCs before you go.

The process

  1. Give plenty of notice — start the conversation with your manager and pensions/HR several months out (three months is a common working minimum; longer is smoother).
  2. Request a pension estimate from your pensions administrator so you know your lump sum and pension figures before you commit dates.
  3. Submit form HR107a (retirement) from the official HSE HR forms page; HR107b covers pension dependants and HR114 the pension rate of pay.
  4. Use up or resolve outstanding leave — untaken annual leave is typically taken before the date or paid per policy.
  5. Confirm your final pay and pension start — your last salary payment, the lump sum, and the first pension payment dates.

Considering going earlier? Cost-neutral early retirement and ill-health retirement are separate routes with their own rules — talk to pensions before assuming. See our guide to every HSE HR form.

Scheme rules and retirement ages are set by your pension scheme's terms — always work from a written pension estimate, not assumptions.

Frequently asked questions

How do I retire from the HSE?
Give months of notice, request a pension estimate from your pensions administrator, submit form HR107a (with HR107b for dependants), resolve outstanding annual leave, and confirm your final pay, lump sum and first pension payment dates.
What age can I retire from the HSE?
It depends on your scheme: joiners before 2004, 2004–2012 joiners, and post-2013 Single Scheme members have different minimum and normal retirement ages. Work from a written pension estimate for your own scheme.
