TRR Explained — Temporary Rehabilitation Remuneration in the HSE (2026)
If you are out sick long enough to exhaust your paid sick leave, the HSE does not simply stop paying you. Temporary Rehabilitation Remuneration (TRR) is the reduced payment that bridges the gap — here is what it is, what it pays, and how it works.
What TRR is
TRR applies when an HSE employee has used up their paid sick-leave entitlement (full pay, then half pay) but is not yet fit to return to work. It is not sick pay — it is income support that keeps you attached to your employment while your health improves or while an ill-health retirement assessment takes place.
What TRR pays
- TRR is paid at a rate equivalent to the Illness Benefit payable by the Department of Social Protection — broadly around €232 per week, with most recipients receiving between roughly €220 and €250 a week depending on PRSI contributions and circumstances.
- It is significantly below normal salary — plan for that if a long absence is ahead.
- You cannot claim Illness Benefit at the same time — TRR is paid instead of it, handled internally by the HSE.
How long it lasts
TRR can generally be paid for up to a further 2 years after paid sick leave is exhausted, subject to ongoing review by HSE Occupational Health. During TRR you remain an HSE employee and your service continues to count for pension purposes.
How you get it
You do not apply separately — TRR is triggered by HR when your paid sick leave runs out. To keep it flowing you should:
- Keep submitting medical certificates for the full absence;
- Attend Occupational Health referrals when arranged;
- Keep your manager and HR informed about your expected return.
Where TRR fits
The sequence is: self-certified days → certified sick leave on full then half pay → TRR → (for serious illness) the enhanced Critical Illness Protocol, which extends the paid stages. The complete scheme is covered in our HSE sick leave policy guide.
Based on the Public Service Sick Leave Scheme as applied in the HSE, 2026. Rates track the prevailing Illness Benefit rate — confirm your exact position with HR or Occupational Health.
